BID Ballindamm

CONCEPT

In order to strengthen cycling in Hamburg, the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg has decided to renew the cycling facilities around the lake Binnenalster. The Ballindamm, Jungfernstieg and Neue Jungfernstieg are main involved areas. The aim of the new design is to create an attractive atmosphere and significantly enlarge the areas for pedestrian and bicycle traffic around the Binnenalster.

The design concept provides for a high-quality, consistent material composition for streets, sidewalks and edgings. On the Alster side, pedestrians can walk along an openly designed promenade and enjoy the view of the Alster thanks to the clearing of shrubs between the trees and widened surfaces.

DESIGN

In coordination with the urban planning and the district office of Hamburg Mitte, a high-quality granite stone in the format 30x60x10 cm is used for the walkways and 30x15x12 cm for the parking spaces. The natural stone slabs are laid flush from the Hamburg edge set by the district office to the facades, as well as for the promenade along the Alster. Steel benches and chairs with a wooden overlay were installed as seating elements. Anthracite-colored bicycle racks, waste containers and bollards blend into the overall urban landscape. New tree plantings, Tilia cordata, provide shade in summer and ensure a pleasant urban climate.
